Once claimed, she could take the lump-sum cash option of just under $360 million or an annual payment over 30 years beginning with $8 million and increasing each year. And the woman, identified for now as Jane Doe, wants a court order to allow her to collect her winnings anonymously.

The complaint references the hardships faced by other lottery winners who have been publicly identified, including Chicopee, Mass., resident Mavis L. Wanczyk, who won a $758.7 million jackpot last August.

The woman admits in court documents that she made a "huge mistake" when she signed her name on the back of the winning ticket.

The victor has not turned in her ticket yet, but showed lottery officials a photocopy of the front to support her claim for the country's eight-largest lottery jackpot.

Here in Australia lottery winners are protected by law and can remain anonymous if they wish.

According to New Hampshire lotto rules, the winner's name, town and amount won has to be available for public information, in accordance with open-records laws.

Her attorney said she deeply values her privacy and announcing her name could lead to safety issues.

In November 2015, Craigory Burch Jr. matched all five numbers in the Georgia Fantasy 5 drawing and won a $434,272 jackpot, The Washington Post's Lindsey Bever reported. "I became more concerned about how I was being judged and perceived, not realizing I was the one doing the judging in the first place".

She didn't know that, of course, until after she'd already signed her name, the Manchester Union Leader reports.

When the attorneys requested if she could have a trustee sign the ticket instead, with the commission present, they were denied.

New Hampshire lottery rules state unclaimed Powerball prizes lapse following one year. The ticket was bought at Reeds Ferry Market, a modest convenience store in Merrimack, N.H. The owner even came out a victor, claiming a $75,000 prize for selling the lucky ducat.

Charlie McIntyre, the state lottery's executive director, said in a statement that his agency understood winning such a large sum was a "life-changing occurrence". It is New Hampshire's second Powerball jackpot victor in the past year and a half, and is the sixth-largest Powerball jackpot on record and the seventh-largest jackpot overall.
