'This Is Us' Recap: Jack's Death Is Finally Explained & It's Devastating

THIS IS US Review: “Super Bowl Sunday” 'This Is Us' Stars Reveal Why Jack's Death Scene Is Even Sadder Than We Thought
| 06 February, 2018, 15:42

Ever since the early episodes of season one, the central preoccupation of "This Is Us" has revolved around how Jack (Milo Ventimiglia), beloved patriarch of the Pearson family, dies. But, for fans of "This Is Us", it is perhaps even bigger. This Is Us will increase its viewership dramatically through DVR time-shifting and VOD. After months of anticipation, Jack's death seems to have finally arrived - and it looks like he's going to go out doing what he does best - being the rock of the Pearson family.

"I think people are so expecting his death and the circumstances around it to be so cinematic when in reality it's so ordinary".

All cried out? It sounds like the flawless time to move on to filming the final scene between Jack and Rebecca before that, and how it felt to film it knowing that it was this couple's last moment together. But that was just a This Is Us fake-out: Jack emerged from the house a moment later carrying both the dog and a bag filled with photo albums and other sentimental items. We see each Pearson child deal with Super Bowl Sunday in their own special way.

All he needed to do was go to the hospital to treat his singed arm. "We made a pact since the beginning to make this couple real, so whenever I see present-day Rebecca, my heart is just crushed". When Rebecca breaks the news to Miguel, he's devastated. JACK DIED. Inhaling that much smoke not only affects the lungs, but the heart too.

If Mandy Moore's warning is any indication, you might need a bit more than a few tissues.

As she's making the phone calls, the audience sees nurses and doctors scrambling behind her into Jack's room (completely out of her view). She didn't believe the doctor. But she tells him that he needs to pull himself together.

Moore then explained why she thought the scenes in the hospital were particularly sad and why it was hard for her to film the episode: "I think people were so expecting his death and the circumstances around it to be so cinematic, when in reality, it's really ordinary".

"We watched the episode as a cast at [creator] Dan Fogelman's house last week, and none of us could speak afterwards".

After the episode, which fans had waited two long seasons for, the slow cooker manufacturer released a statement explaining all the technology that goes into ensuring that your slow cooker won't actually kill you. "We were sort of speechless", she recalled. The surprise flash-forward was a first for This Is Us, and fans were totally freaking out.

Just showed them tonight's episode. More specifically, what direction does it take after Jack is, finally, laid to rest in Tuesday's episode?

"Questions will be answered in a very satisfying way", This Is Us executive producer Isaac Aptaker told EW. What story or aspect of Jack's life do you want to know more about in season 2 and beyond?
