2018 iPhones Expected to Use Intel Modems Exclusively

2018 iPhones to rely solely on Intel baseband chips, KGI claims Intel may exclusive modem supplier for be next-gen Apple iPhone X
| 06 February, 2018, 15:32

Analysts at KGI Securities said Intel's modem chips were less expensive than Qualcomm chips and also met Apple's standards, according to Apple news website 9to5Mac. Now that Apple is involved in a range of legal battles with Qualcomm, the Cupertino company could ditch Qualcomm to source iPhone 11 chips exclusively from Intel. According to MacRumors, which has shared the report, Kuo thinks Qualcomm will be totally excluded from Apple's supply chain, though he also speculates this could change if the two players reconcile. Since Apple will be sourcing iPhone 11 chips from a single supplier, there will be no discrepancy this time.

This report is the latest in the growing tension between Apple and Qualcomm over a major lawsuit on anticompetitive licensing practices. Broadcom is attempting to acquire Qualcomm, and increased its offer for the company Monday morning, but that didn't help Qualcomm share prices, which fell more than 2.5% in early trading while Broadcom shares gained more than 1%. That means Apple handed over as much as $40 to Qualcomm on an $800 iPhone.

Apple believes Qualcomm used the former's patented technology to create the Snapdragon processors, particularly Snapdragon 800 and Snapdragon 820, which have been powering phones since 2016.

Intel is also said to be offering more competitive prices. It is rumored that benchmark tests have shown that Qualcomm chips performed better than Intel hardware. Qualcomm is expected to aggressively pursue orders from Chinese smartphone makers to offset the lost orders. If you want to manufacture a phone that has the ability to send and receive data or one capable of a high-speed internet connection, you more than likely have to get a license from Qualcomm.

Even though Intel will be the sole supplier of baseband modems for 2018 iPhones, its exclusivity might not last long. When things didn't go Apple's way, the company made a decision to wage war and Qualcomm retaliated in kind.

Apple and Intel declined to comment.

There's another potential fly in the ointment, which is that Intel may lag behind Qualcomm when it comes to having modems that support 5G networks.
