The final reverse singles rubber set to feature Australian No.2 Alex de Minaur against Jan-Lennard Struff was abandoned after Germany sealed the win.

The hot-headed Aussie lost his cool in the 6-2 7-6 6-2 loss to Germany's Alex Zverev.

German captain Michael Kohlmann said he had had a good feeling about the match once he knew Australia hadn't chose to bring Nick Kyrgios in for Ebden."In my mind they (Peers and Ebden) hadn't played together before, or not a lot, and I knew my guys know each other pretty well", he said.

Australia has been bundled out of the Davis Cup, with Nick Kyrgios's defeat to world number five Alexander Zverev handing the Germans an unassailable 3-1 lead in the tie. "I would have given up my Brisbane title to win this tie", Kyrgios said.

Kyrgios - who has been vocal about how much he loves competing in the Davis Cup - is expected to lead Australia in the World Group Play-offs later this year.

"Of course if you go into a match knowing you had to win otherwise your team loses it is something for sure you are thinking about", he said.

However, Kyrgios denied he was feeling any pressure after the doubles loss - just discomfort in his elbow.

Former world No.1 Hewitt had hinted that he may play on Saturday but resisted the temptation, pairing Ebden with world No.4 doubles specialist Peers.

"They didn't play the best match they could have played but they still fought, but came up short - I wasn't thinking about that at all".

Germany team captain Michael Kohlmann revealed he was convinced Kyrgios would play doubles and admitted to breathing easier when the Australian No.1 was officially omitted on Saturday.

"I wanted to be there for him, to share my experience with him", Kyrgios said of cheering on de Minaur.

"Once you are looking elsewhere it becomes a tougher battle than the one on one battle". Nothing is going to change that, " Hewitt said after Australia had regressed from 2017 semi-finalists to first-round losers.

No. 14-ranked Kyrgios looked frustrated from the start of the match on hard courts at Pat Rafter Arena, and required a second-set medical timeout to receive treatment on his right arm.

"It's an option, it all depends on how his body is", he said.

Kyrgios has played just one doubles rubber for Australia - and lost.

Australia will have to win through a playoff in September to be in the 16-nation world group in 2019. But with recently-crowned Australian Open champion Federer and injury-hit Wawrinka not making the trip to Astana, the Kazakhs made the most of their opportunity.
