Trump's lawyers argue Mueller has not met threshold for presidential interview

Mueller interview poses thorny predicament for Trump Donald Trump called for Robert Mueller's firing last year, then backed off: report

Mark Corallo had represented Trump's outside lawyers amid the federal and congressional Russia inquiries until he resigned last summer, after revelations about a June 2016 meeting between Trump's son Donald Jr and a group of Russians.

While the White House has cooperated with Mueller's investigation by providing documents and voluntary witness testimony, the President's legal team argues that the President should not be treated like anyone else.

The discussions about presidential testimony are ongoing and professional, says one source.

Robert Mueller on February 16, 2011, as he testifies before a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing in Washington, D.C. The president reportedly ordered Mueller fired in June but backed off when the White House counsel refused to go along. "A source close to the White House, who is familiar with the president's speech, said that it is still possible that the president could fire Robert Mueller".

Citing three people with knowledge of the interview request, the Times said Corallo was concerned about the possibility Hicks could have been planning to obstruct justice.

Trump has denied the notion that his campaign colluded with Moscow, and has called the investigation a "witch hunt".

Now that reports have emerged about McGahn's role in blocking Trump from firing Mueller in June, legal experts say there is reason to believe that Trump's efforts to further curtail the Russian Federation investigation will be met with further resistance. He also attacked Mueller's investigators as having conflicts of interest, and expressed unhappiness with the deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein. Mike Flynn, the former national security adviser, and George Papadopoulos, a foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign, have pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Robert Mueller has been investigating for nine months. Congress must shield Mueller and the investigation must continue unimpeded.
