Trans Mountain pipeline project will be built, says PM Trudeau

PCA voices strong opposition to B.C. Trans Mountain decision Premier-Designate Moe backs Notley in BC pipeline dispute

"Goodbye. ... Yes, we are asking the police to remove you".

"The B.C. government took this action with no provocation and nearly no warning", Notley said."The government of Alberta will not, we can not, let this unconstitutional attack on jobs and working people stand".

The prime minister was greeted by a chorus of boos amidst cheers by another section of people as he walked into the Vancouver Island University hall at Nanaimo town in British Columbia during the last lap of his cross country tour, according to CBC. But the anti-pipeline sentiment dominated much of the question-and-answer session.

Speaking on Edmonton talk radio station CHED on Thursday, Trudeau said the pipeline, which would take Alberta crude to the West Coast for shipment to Asian markets, is in the national interest and will go ahead.

Mr. Trudeau was pressed by members of the audience about Canada's ability to clean up an oil spill.

And, he added, agreeing to the pipeline was necessary to get Alberta onside with the pan-Canadian climate action plan. "We didn't know this was a formal thing that could really happen, and here we are being told it's not a thing".

"And the other thing I would suggest", she added, "is that he might want to have a conversation with the 40,000-or-so British Columbians who actually have their jobs connected to Alberta's oilsands, who then pay taxes in B.C. This is not just an Alberta issue". On Friday, Mr. Horgan accused Alberta of overreacting.

The Alberta government has been pushing strongly for the Trans Mountain expansion project to be built so that energy producers in the province would have more options when selling crude, while the B.C. government has vowed to stop it over environmental concerns. The NDP formed a minority government with support from the Green Party.

The province is already challenging the project in Federal Court, arguing that B.C. was not adequately consulted.

"I don't doubt for a minute Premier Notley's conviction and passion for Alberta, nor do I dismiss the responsibilities of the Prime Minister, but I am not going to put aside my responsibilities to stand up to defend British Columbia", he said.
