Six people including "people of colour" have allegedly been injured, four of them seriously, media reported.

The shooting suspect was identified as Luca Traini, a 28-year-old Italian with no previous record. The news agency ANSA said witnesses reported that the vehicle was seen in the area where the woman's body was found. One had life-threatening injuries, he said. The suspect, Innocent Oseghale, who was denied asylum a year ago but has remained in Italy, has refused to talk to police.

He said: "Stay at home until further notice".

Police did not immediately connect the two incidents, though the city's mayor, Romano Carancini, said Saturday, "the closeness of these two events makes you imagine that there is a connection".

The ruling center-left Democratic Party said Traini also fired shots at one of their offices in Macerata on Saturday, reports Reuters.

Police detained a 28-year-old Italian they believe to be responsible.

The shooting spree came days after the slaying of 18-year-old Pamela Mastropietro and amid a heated electoral campaign in Italy where anti-foreigner sentiment has become a key theme. The news agency ANSA quoted friends of his as saying that Traini had previously been affiliated with Italian extremist parties like the neo-fascist Forza Nuova and CasaPound.

Traini, who police said had no previous arrest record before the shootings, ran a losing bid in local elections past year for the anti-migrant Northern League in the nearby city of Corridonia, about six miles outside Macerata.

Italian police tweeted: "Gunshots in Macerata".

The mayor of Macerata urged people to remain indoors after reports of drive-by shootings in the city of about 43,000, about 200 kilometres east of Rome.

Sky said the shooting started around 11amlocal time (9pm Saturday AEST) and that students were being kept inside schools which are open on Saturday, and public transport had been halted.
