LA School Shooting Deemed Unintentional By Police

Police arrested the girl and recovered a gun after the shooting, which happened just before 9 a.m.at Salvador B. Castro Middle School near downtown, said Steve Zipperman, chief of the Los Angeles Unified School District police force.

A strikingly similar shooting to Thursday's happened just south of Los Angeles in Gardena on January 18, 2011, when a gun went off inside a 17-year-old boy's backpack after he set it on a desk, wounding two students with one bullet, including a girl who was shot in the head.

The boy who was shot in the head was in stable condition at LAC-USC Medical Center following the incident and is expected to make a full recovery.

Authorities say Samuel Woodward, 20, of Newport Beach killed 19-year-old sophomore Blaze Bernstein and buried his body in a neighborhood park not far from the Bernstein family's home in Lake Forest.

Two students were hit directly by gunfire and three other victims were hit by shrapnel, police said.

The suspect is likely to face arraignment on Monday on two felony charges, which include being a minor in possession of a firearm and having a weapon on school grounds, prosecutors said.

"The school has been declared safe, and we are communicating with parents of students at Castro Middle School, as well as neighboring campuses".

The suspect in a Los Angeles school shooting allegedly thought the gun was a toy, according to reports on Friday, Feb. 2.

The sobbing girl told him: "I didn't mean to".

The boy was initially listed in critical condition but doctors said that the bullet didn't hit anything vital or cause any life-threatening injury.

"She was crying", Jordan said. The school was placed on lockdown, which later was lifted. According to the student, she told him that the gun was in her backpack and that it "accidentally went off when she dropped the bag".

Parents waited anxiously for several hours outside the middle school before being reunited with their children after police locked down the campus and searched classrooms.

Police received a call about the shooting at the school in the Westlake North neighbourhood at 8.55am local time and responded.
