Feds show no 'love' for Thruway signs $14M withheld over noncompliance

'I Love NY' signs costing New York $14 million in federal funding Cuomo administration says 'I Love NY' road signs will be replaced after feds threatened to hit with $14M fine

The Cuomo administration has agreed to remove and replace hundreds of the highway signs after federal officials threatened to withhold $14 million in funding.

Miller says Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo should use campaign funds to reimburse the state for the money spent to make the signs and any lost federal aid.

"A spokesman said the signs 'will be reused, but as the signs will be redesigned for the new campaign, we will consult with federal officials".

Separately, state Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-47, Rome, sent a letter Friday to state Department of Transportation Acting Commissioner Paul Karas and state Thruway Authority Acting Executive Director Matthew Driscoll urging a quick resolution to the matter.

Federal leaders said Thursday New York would lose out on $14 million in federal funds over the signs dispute.

Some signs tell drivers where to stop or where not to stop, where not to go and where they can not - which is why so many people are wondering about a series of billboards on highways across the state. The new campaign will be called "NY has it all!" "It's an incompetence on government to have put these signs up - being that it's a violation of federal law - then there was an arrogance not taking them down".

It also would result in an automatic $1.5 billion increase in personal income taxes paid to the state, much of it coming from the same people who have the most to lose from the new federal limits on state and local tax deductions, according to the Empire Center, an Albany think tank.

State officials credited the signs with driving up tourism and said the new campaign will carry the theme of "NY has it all!"

Federal Highway Administration officials say the funding will be reinstated if there's a resolution by September 30.

"It will be a new campaign launched for the summer tourism cycle and as such must be concluded before the September FHWA deadline anyway". But, if NY and federal officials reached an agreement by September, the money could be restored, News 8 was told.
