Yemen PM prepares to flee Aden

Saudi Coalition Under Pressure as Yemeni Allies Turn on Each Other Saudi Arabia’s offensive to restore a friendly government in neighboring Yemen is facing new turmoil
| 02 February, 2018, 11:21

The coalition said it would take "all necessary steps to restore security" but has not announced any new operation to help the government in Aden. The coalition also requested from all Yemeni parties to resolve their disputed issues through available political mechanisms and the three references.

Witnesses told Xinhua that security forces loyal to the STC also surrounded and stormed the 4th Presidential Guard camp in the eastern part of Aden.

In an interview with France 24's Arabic-language channel, the president of the council, Aidarous al-Zubaidi, said his fighters were still "engaged in a mission with the Saudi-led coalition".

Yemen's embattled President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi said Monday that a "coup" is underway in his government's seat of power in the southern city of Aden, where separatists allied with the United Arab Emirates were battling his forces for a second day.

Reuters reported that residents said forces loyal to the Southern Transitional Council (STC), formed a year ago to push for the revival of the former independent state of South Yemen, seized the last stronghold of Hadi's Presidential Protection Forces in the Dar Saad area of northern Aden, in battles that at times involved heavy artillery and tank fire.

The clashes came after separatist forces seized government buildings in what Yemen's prime minister called an attempted coup.

The seizure of the military base, which is located in Aden's northern Dar Saad district, is the largest gain for the separatist group since fighting began Sunday.

The Saudi-led coalition urged both sides to cease hostilities on Tuesday.

The government, however, decided on Monday to ban demonstrations organized by the supporters of the STC and engaged in armed confrontations with other troops.

How does this development fit into the main conflict in Yemen: The seizure of Aden opens yet another front in the country's devastating civil war.

Saudi Arabia backs Mr Hadi, who is based in Riyadh, while the United Arab Emirates - a key partner in the coalition - is closely aligned with the separatists.

The separatists dispatched additional forces from the central province of Marib and the southern province of Abyan, the sources said.

Tensions have recently started to spike between southern separatists and the government of Hadi over the control of the southern half of Yemen.

Hadi, who is based in Saudi Arabia, renewed his call for a cease-fire, saying "rebellion and weapons won't achieve peace or build a state".

The Huthi rebels, who are backed by Iran, control most of northern Yemen.
