United Airlines denies peacock support animal to board plane in New Jersey

Not surprisingly, United Airlines refused, and the peacock remained ground-bound.

The story that United Airlines denied boarding to a passenger's "emotional support peacock" has caused something of a social media flap.

A video shared by Sherri Ross on Twitter shows the animal casually perched on its owner's shoulder as she walks into the Newark Liberty International Airport.

Ventiko, who was identified by Newsweek, then volunteered to pay for a seat for the bird but was turned down by United personnel.

The US Department of Transportation says that airlines don't have to let support animals into the cabin if they're too large, heavy, disruptive, or threatening to the crew and passengers. Ventiko went to Instagram (on her peacock's account) to share Dexter's next move - road trip! According to his Instagram page, Dexter lives with the artist Ventiko, and can occasionally be spotted strolling the streets of NY.

"No, I don't think they should have denied her because it's an unusual animal".

Photos of the peacock were posted to Facebook by the travel talk show the Jet Set. "If airlines followed the ADA guidelines for what is legal for a service animal than we would not be in this awful situation of traveling with fake service animals of all types", Turner wrote in an email.

United - Passengers must submit a document from a medical or mental health professional which states that the passenger has a "mental health-related disability" and that the emotional support animal "is necessary to the passenger's mental health or treatment".

Delta initially faced backlash for its decision to tighten restrictions, but it's possible other airlines will follow suit as they try to crack down on passengers who abuse the support animal provision and use it to travel with their pets for free.

One passenger managed to bring a Turkey onto a Delta Airlines flight in 2016 under these federal guidelines, according to a post on Reddit. Rather, the airline said it did so because of safety concerns and because company policy prohibits anything "protruding into the aisle".

It added that some animals are barred altogether from traveling in the passenger cabin, including "hedgehogs, ferrets, insects, rodents, snakes, spiders, reptiles, sugar gliders, non-household birds, exotic animals and animals not properly cleaned or carrying a foul odor".
