Rosenstein asked for Trump to reconsider releasing Nunes memo, Washington Post reports

Trump Asked Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein If He's on His 'Team': Report Trump Asked Mueller's Boss If He Was 'On My Team'

Rosenstein's meeting with the president - a meeting Trump appeared focused on, CNN reported. It's key that the Justice Department operates with independence from the executive branch, since Presidents would otherwise be able to influence or curtail investigations into their own conduct.

Sources familiar with a December meeting between Trump and Rosenstein told CNN that Trump wanted to know if Rosenstein was "on my team". Rosenstein had apparently called the meeting to ask for Trump's support in turning down document requests from House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes, who has written a widely-disputed memo that claims the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation improperly spied on the Trump campaign.

President Donald Trump allegedly asked Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the official in charge of overseeing the Russian Federation probe, if he was on Trump's side.

A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment when reached by the Daily News Wednesday afternoon. The White House has said Trump will consult with his national security and legal teams before deciding whether to release it.

As CNN reports, Trump seemed to care more about the status of the ongoing special counsel investigation than he did about Nunes' requests.

Rosenstein's meeting with the President came as Rosenstein prepared to testify before the House Judiciary Committee.

In February, Trump was reportedly angry over comments made by Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch that he considered pulling his nomination over concerns that he would not be "loyal", according to the Washington Post. The regulations are so vague (they say only that he "may determine that public release of these reports would be in the public interest, to the extent that release would comply with applicable legal restrictions") that they, in effect, give Rosenstein plenary discretion to do whatever he thinks is in the best interest of the country.

At the hearing, from Trump and denied that anyone ever asked him to pledge his loyalty, dating back to his time in the Bush administration. Trump fired Comey to kill the FBI investigation of his presidential campaign.
