The Nintendo Switch has continuously surpassed expectations since it launched ten months ago.
The Switch is now on pace to catch the success of the Gamecube, which sold 21.74 million little purple lunchboxes, but still quite a distance from the revolutionary Wii, which sold a staggering 101.63 million. By hitting back - and capturing the public's imagination - with the Switch, the company has proved them wrong.
Switch sales almost doubled from October to December as Christmas approached, with 7.2 million units sold. During that time, it sold a grand total of 13.56 million units. The company's earnings reports indicate that Nintendo experienced a 261% revenue bump from a year ago. For now, Nintendo says both devices will be sold alongside one another. It also makes last quarter Nintendo's most profitable in eight years.
Considering that Super Mario Odyssey has already outsold the original Mario Kart 8, Nintendo's ideas for the Switch can only go upwards after the past generation. Switch is expected to comfortably exceed 15 million sales by March 2018, up from the previous estimate of 14 million.
Thankfully, Nintendo seems to have a plan in place to keep a strong library of games coming for the console.
Since the launch of Nintendo's Switch, the company's market value has steadily risen.
Tatsumi Kimishima, Nintendo's president, praised the success of the Switch but acknowledged that for it to be a true global success it needed to become popular beyond core gaming fans.
