San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz said many people in the US territory need the water and food they have been getting from FEMA more than four months after Hurricane Maria devastated the island.

Ed Loomis, USACE public affairs specialist, said Keith deployed to Puerto Rico on November 14 to serve as a peer supporter with Critical Incident Stress Management.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said FEMA's decision is another example of how the USA continues to neglect the people of Puerto Rico and ignore responsibilities to help them.

FEMA officials announced they will officially end the mission on Wednesday.

FEMA tweeted that its work in Puerto Rico, which was ravaged by Hurricane Maria in September, would continue "from response to recovery."We will continue our support to #PuertoRico from response to recovery. Now is not the time to remove this life-sustaining assistance". "Cutting this aid to the people of Puerto Rico, nearly a third of them who still do not have electricity, it's unconscionable", the Democratic lawmaker said. Marco Rubio, who also represents Florida, who pointed out many in America have misconceptions about Puerto Rico, which may compound the problem. "Puerto Rico is a USA territory and its residents are US citizens".

Eric Rodriguez, Vice President of UnidosUS (formerly NCLR): "In this evening's State of the Union address President Trump spoke about unity and making America strong yet those words ring hollow when we look at the humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico". Rubio followed Nelson on the Senate floor, urging lawmakers not to forget about disaster relief for Puerto Rico, Florida, Texas and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The agency said it has distributed more than 65 million liters of bottled water (costing $361 million) and 58 million meals and snacks (costing $1.6 billion). "Supermarkets are open, and things are going back to normal", Alejandro De La Campa, FEMA's director in Puerto Rico, told NPR.

Local Corps employee Keith Hyde received recognition on January 20 during an award ceremony in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, for his work following Hurricane Irma, which was August 30-Sept.

In a follow-up interview, a second FEMA spokesperson, William Booher, said that the agency still had no plans to resume shipments of new food and water to Puerto Rico. If Florida, or other states, were facing similar situations as the island, there would be an outrage by Members of Congress.
