Senate Panel Denied Entry to Nunes' FISA Memo

"Agencies that are under investigation by congressional committees don't typically get access to the committees' investigative documents about them, and it's no surprise these agencies don't want the abuses we've found to be made public", Nunes spokesman Jack Langer said, responding to Boyd's letter.

Oklahoma senator James Lankford said the Senate has not yet seen the House memo, but that the intelligence committee is working to determine the source documents that it is based on.

As the rhetoric over the controversial intelligence memo written by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) has intensified, the Justice Department has spoken out, warning Nunes about releasing the document. Only three of the five, though, said they had "confidence in the factual accuracy" of the document's claims.

"We do not understand why the Committee would possibly seek to disclose classified and law enforcement sensitive information without first consulting with the relevant members of the intelligence community", wrote assistant attorney general Stephen Boyd.

Strzok was abruptly removed from special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe earlier this year after the DOJ began investigating his seemingly biased messages.

The document apparently deals with a dossier on then-candidate Donald Trump prepared by former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele in 2016 for research firm Fusion GPS.

It's naturally become a partisan flashpoint, with Republicans siding with Nunes and Democrats coming out against the memo, accusing it of being willfully misleading.

In its opening language, the memo says that its goal is to brief lawmakers on the findings of the Intelligence Committee's investigation into actions by the Department of Justice and the FBI, according to a Democrat familiar with the document; the actions had to do with an application for a warrant under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act in connection with Mueller's investigation. "Regrettably, it has been necessary for Committee Democrats to draft our own memorandum, setting out the relevant facts and exposing the misleading character of the Republicans' document so that members of the House are not left with an erroneous impression of the dedicated professionals at the Federal Bureau of Investigation and DOJ".

But committee Democrats have suggested that countering the GOP memo is hard because detailing the other intelligence that the FISA warrant application is based on, and that the memo reportedly omits, would reveal sources and methods. If he objects, the full House would meet behind closed doors for a vote to decide the matter. The DOJ, Boyd added, is "currently unaware of any wrongdoing relating to the FISA process".

Schiff on Wednesday urged against publicly releasing the GOP memo.
