"Rescuers have retrieved 36 bodies so far", state transport minister Subhendu Adhikari told AFP news agency. Police lobbed tear gas shells and also resorted to lathicharge to control the situation.

According to the locals, around 50-60 passengers were travelling in the bus, which was going from Nadia district's Shikarpur to Malda.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee cancelled all her prior engagements and chose to head to the spot with transport minister Subhendu Adhikari and principal secretary (transport) Alapan Bandopadhyay.

Banerjee said all efforts were being made to rescue passengers. An ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh was announced by the West Bengal government for the family members of the deceased and Rs one lakh to those seriously injured.

Area locals had started agitation alleging delay in rescue operations and in the process damaged and burnt a police vehicle as well as a rescue van.

30 deaths have been confirmed in an accident in Murshidabad district in West Bengal in which a Bus fell into Ajay river from the Bally bridge. He also alleged that by the time police arrived, a huge crowd had already gathered and were working on the rescue operations. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) sources stated that all the bodies stuck inside the bus were fished out by the evening.

Local MP and West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee president Adhir Ranjan Choudhury said that the lives could have been saved.

Eyewitnesses said that the bus went under the water of the Bhandardaha lake in Balirghat village, around 12km from Behrampore town, within minutes of plunging into it around 7am. We want an inquiry and proper investigation on how this accident took place. Several rescue boats have been pressed into action.
