Facebook says it will push more local news in news feed

"This is just the beginning of our efforts to prioritize high-quality news", wrote Alex Hardiman, head of news product, and Campbell Brown, head of news partnerships, in a release.

Facebook is defining a publisher as local, it says, if its links "are clicked on by readers in a tight geographic area". Earlier this month, he said Facebook's algorithms would prioritize posts from family and friends over posts from brands and media outlets.

Recent changes at Facebook include a new "trusted sources" ranking meant to "make sure the news you see is high quality" and to foster "a sense of common ground" rather than sow division, Zuckerberg said in a previous post.

Facebook Inc Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said on Monday the social media website would focus on promoting local news in its latest update. Now, it's turning its attention to local news. "Local news helps us understand the issues that matter in our communities and affect our lives", he writes. After all, a hyperlocal, decentralized version of Facebook's news feed could ultimately have the effect of further polarizing sources if not balanced with broader, national news coverage.

"Starting today, we're going to show more stories from news sources in your local town or city", Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg notes in a new blog post. Not only will large local publishers benefit, but small niche outlets that cover sports, arts, and human-interest stories will too.

The change initially applies to U.S. users only, with plans for additional countries later in the year.

As part of its ongoing push for more "meaningful" content, Facebook now says it will give greater preference to local news in users' New Feeds.

Zuckerberg travelled around the USA past year, visiting with Facebook users.

If people follow a local publisher, that content is now more likely to appear prominently in their feeds, Zuckerberg said.

The update will initially apply to the United States before it is rolled out more widely.

"Research suggests that reading local news is directly correlated with civic engagement", he said.

What Facebook is also doing, without spelling it out explicitly, is trying to cut down on fringe publishers, or bad actors that are deliberately trying to game the system.

Facebook's news feed has another new focus: local news.
