Officials feared that the death toll could rise.

The attack followed another deadly incident in the Afghan capital the week before in which Taliban fighters killed 22 people at a Kabul hotel, according to The Associated Press.

A least 40 people have been killed in Afghanistan and around 150 wounded after a suicide blast in Kabul.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg strongly condemned the attack, reiterating the Alliance's support to counterterrorism campaign in Afghanistan.

"He passed through the first checkpoint saying he was taking a patient to Jamuriate hospital and at the second checkpoint he was recognised and blew [up] his explosive-laden vehicle", said Mr Rahimi. "Our thoughts are with the victims and their families, and we stand with the fearless people of #Afghanistan".

"The United States is committed to a secure Afghanistan that is free from terrorists who would target Americans, our allies and anyone who does not share their wicked ideology". The attack started when four gunmen entered the hotel and started shooting the guests.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Taliban claimed responsibility and said the bombing targeted a building used by the Interior Ministry and High Peace Council, a body set up in 2010 to negotiate with insurgents.

Elsewhere in Afghanistan, a suicide auto bomber targeted security forces in the southern province of Helmand, wounding at least six people on January 27, local officials said.

But Saturday's bombing was not just another attack in the Afghan capital, CNN senior worldwide correspondent Nick Paton Walsh said.

He said the injured were taken to Jamhuriat, Emergency, Wazir Akbar Khan and National Directorate of Security (NDS) hospitals for treatment. Also, the attack was so hard and it made a dark smoke into the sky from the site of the explosion near the government's former Interior Ministry building. On Wednesday, the IS led an attack on Save the Children's headquarters in Jalalabad killing four NGO employees, a passerby and a security force member along with the five terrorists.

A bomb blast at a Shia cultural center last month also killed more than 40 people.

The latest attack comes at a seminal moment in the 16-year Afghanistan War, Patton-Walsh said.
