German nurse serving life sentence facing 97 new charges of murder

Niels Hoegel German nurse allegedly kills 103 patient out of boredom

A German nurse, serving life term for two murders and three attempted murders of intensive-care patients, was on Monday charged for 97 other killings.

Read on for more.

Prosecutors said the nurse should have been aware that the drugs he was giving his patients could cause ailments ranging from possible cardiac arrhythmia, ventricular fibrillation to hypotension.

In Britain, Dr. Harold Shipman was believed to have killed as many as 250 people, a lot of them elderly and middle-aged women who were his patients.

He said: "If the people responsible at the time, particularly at the Oldenburg clinic but also later in Delmenhorst, hadn't hesitated to alert authorities - for example police, prosecutors". The charges relate to the deaths of 35 patients at a hospital in the northwestern German city and 62 more in nearby Delmenhorst.

A week after starting the new job, he had killed again, investigators say.

His first conviction came in 2008, but over the next decade came new revelations - and a rising body count. He said he gave them lethal injections because he felt sorry for them.

Hoegel said the decision to administer life-threatening dosages of medication was "usually spontaneous".

But afterward, his resolve would slowly fade.

Authorities laid some of the blame at the feet of officials at the hospitals where Hoegel worked, saying they could have acted faster to prevent deaths.

Speaking previous year, Oldenburg police chief Johann Kuehme said that he believes numerous killings could have been prevented had people been willing to speak out. "People at the clinic in Oldenburg knew of the abnormalities".

As a result of his confessions, investigators carried out toxicological exams on dozens of patients who had died at the hospitals during the periods Hoegel's worked there - the results of these exams have led to the new charges being brought.
